Chapter 26

Doing a Mental Rewind

With my crew busy up in their rooms trying to come up with some information on that LLC, Caleb in the side garden, Ava gathering herbs in her garden, Juliette cleaning the carriage house, and me at the library desk, I had time to do a mental rewind on what we found suspicious at the start when we had first arrived at the Maison. An overlooked detail might come to mind.

But it was cut short before I even began because the front doorbell had sounded. Instead of sighing, wondering who it could possibly be, I jumped up from the desk and headed for the foyer. And without even trying to peek through that wavy colored glass I whipped open the door.

My mouth was already open to say, “How can I help you?” But nothing came out.

I couldn’t believe who I was staring at, while chastising myself for not setting up a time to meet with him before this. Obviously, with what had been going on at the Maison, this was the one visitor I should’ve pursued and followed up on, but had become so caught up in other minutiae, that even though he was in my thoughts with how he tied into this, I hadn’t invited him back.

What had come over me lately? Was I slipping?

I finally found the words and said, “Please, come in.”

It was Rémy Renault, Francoise’s brother, and his only surviving relative, a noteworthy detail to remember. Was he interested in contesting the ownership of the Maison? After all, he was next of kin, wasn’t he? But even if he was, I couldn’t think of how he could pull that off.

Did he know something I didn’t?

No, if he were going down that road, he would have long ago, while Francoise’s death was still viable as far as the law was concerned. According to what I’d already researched, there was no deadline for settling a Georgia estate. Depending on the size of the estate, beneficiaries can anticipate the probate process to take anywhere from six months to several years.

But that did not apply in this case, did it?

That LLC had already owned the estate well before Francoise had died. So, those facts were a moot point as far as being a lone surviving relative and inheritance were concerned.

No. I’d bet my money that Rémy wanted inside this Maison to have a look for himself.

I stood there waiting for which verbal façade he would try to pull off, the “I’m his only living relative,” bargaining chip, or “I’ve done a lot of soul searching about our relationship.”

He surprised me by holding his hand out for a shake. “I should apologize for last time.”

I smiled and shook his hand, wondering what he was talking about. Hey, it was two brothers having a disagreement. No big deal. ...Or was it?

“No problem, Rémy,” I said, deciding on neutral territory for now.

I then gestured him inside toward the library.

He nodded and smiled. “Thank you.”

“Would you like a cup of coffee?” I asked.
